GRAND FINAL

IT’S A LONG WAY TO THE TOP
IF YOU’RE ON AN IMPRO ROLL

THE CRANSTON CUP Theatresports®
GRAND FINAL IS HERE!

More comebacks than The Eagles
Funnier than a Guns and Roses ballad
Louder than a Hendrix guitar whose volume only goes to 10….

GrandFinal

SO get your laughing shoes on and rock while they roll. Australia’s No 1 Annual Improvised Comedy Event returns to the Enmore Theatre.

Always hilarious and completely anarchic. It is like no other comedy experience.

Hosted by 5 times Theatresports® Champion, Australia’s No. 1 TV Warm Up Guy and ROCK GOD, Ewan Campbell (pictured).

Featuring an opening Glam Rock extravaganza that’s a cross between Spinal Tap, Wayne’s World and the Bankstown High School Rock Eisteddfod, this show opens with a wah wah pedal and finishes with a 40 minute drum solo (that’s if the drummer has his way…)

But most importantly this is the culmination of this year’s Theatresports® Cranston Cup competition, with the FINAL 4 teams playing off to see who will enter the Theatresports® HALL OF FAME.

Current players fighting off other groupies for a place in the final include Rebecca De Unamuno (Comedy Inc, The Chaser) – Dave Bloustein (writer on ABCTV's The Glass House), Amanda Buckley (2006 RAW Comedy semi-finalist) and Murray Fahey (Film-maker & Perennial Theatresports® champion).

Performing improvised sketches based on audience suggestions similar in nature to the television shows Whose Line is it Anyway and Thank God You’re Here! This is the nation’s favourite cult comic show and it is celebrating 25 years!

So if you love your comedy fast and frantic, if you can’t believe they’re really making it all up on the spot, and if you want to enjoy the biggest laugh of the year, then come and see why The Theatresports® Cranston Cup Grand Final has been a SELL-OUT SUCCESS for more than TWO DECADES! The ideas don’t come in Spicks and Specks, each teams vies to be The Boss, with more laugh lines than Bohemian Rhapsody key changes.

Super

A comedy institution – and Sydney’s longest running show – turns 25 this month as the contest begins.

Who will reign supreme in
the battle to win impro’s
Holy Grail of ‘Ha Ha’?

Rugby League has its NRL trophy, Racing has the Melbourne Cup and Soccer its World Cup. But for comedy, the ultimate prize is the Theatresports® ‘Cranston Cup’. Each September, Sydney's top comic improvisers put their wit and courage to the test as their teams battle each other to reach the grand final and get their hands on the biggest, ugliest trophy in Australia.

Born in 1984 and named after a particularly memorable character invention, the Theatresports® Cranston Cup challenges performers to create instant comedy sketches based on audience suggestions. The competition begins its annual march to comic glory at Newtown Theatre from Sunday 16 Sept.

Past Cranston Cup competitions have seen well known comedians such as Andrew Denton, Wil Anderson, Gary Eck, Gabby Millgate, Murray Fahey, Gia Carides, Jay La'gaia, Ewan Campbell, Michael Gregory, Julia Zemiro, Rebecca DeUnamuno, Marko Mustac, James O'Loghlin, Lisa Ricketts and many more compete for comic glory. In 2007 some of these champions are back!

Hungry new talent will also fight their way through the heats to challenge celebrity comics and veteran stars - including world champs - for their place in the spotlight.

It’s sudden death, spontaneous, cut-throat comedy and it puts Sydney’s cleverest writers, quickest-witted comics, funniest media personalities and more in the ring together!

Standup comics take on actors, sit-com writers meet radio jocks, lawyers cross comic quips with other clowns...

14 teams including champions from Canberra, the 2007 Theatresports® Schools Competition Grand Final, as well as students from the University of Sydney and Macquarie University will be cut down to six, to face-off in the Grand Final at Enmore Theatre. One half-dozen of the most nimble-minded funniest foursomes in the country have thrown down the gauntlet.

Played in theatres all over the world, Theatresports® is the original and still the leading improvised comedy format having inspired TV shows like Whose Line is it Anyway? and Thank God You’re Here.

Heats are each Sunday night 8pm at Newtown Theatre (5pm 30 Sept & 28 Oct), Sunday 16 September to 28 October, leading to semi finals at the Belvoir St Theatre in November (11 & 18, repechage 25 Nov) and the big December 2nd Grand Final at the Enmore Theatre.

Sydney comedy institution, the Cranston Cup season is the company's flagship - an annual cut-throat competition between teams of comic actors. Set the task of creating instant theatrical scenes, poems, songs and even operas with absolutely no preparation time, every show is 'on the edge'. Let the games begin.
